Covenanters' Prison and Mausoleums

The southern end of Greyfriars Kirkyard holds some of Edinburgh's darkest history. You will find 19th-century grave protections and a 17th-century prison here.

This walled section reveals a harsh chapter of Scottish history. In 1679, approximately 1,200 prisoners were held in brutal conditions following the Battle of Bothwell Bridge.

Today, this area is known for heavy iron mortsafes and the imposing tomb of Sir George Mackenzie. It is also the focal point for many local evening ghost tours.

Mortsafes

These heavy iron grilles cover several graves in the older sections of the kirkyard. They were built in the 19th century to stop grave robbers from stealing freshly buried bodies. Look for the large metal cages resting directly on the ground.
